Infected by Average: Identifying and Treating Mediocraditis

There is a serious disease running rampant in the fire service that needs to be addressed. Mediocraditis is quietly spreading faster than COVID-19 ever did and virtually no one is paying attention to the damage it causes.

Fear Not!

This article will give you all that you need to know about the disease, symptoms and treatment options.

Stay safe out there!

Me•de•o•cra•di•tis

A psychological and social contagious disease characterized by an obsessive satisfaction with the bare minimum. Individuals infected with mediocraditis not only embrace average performance and uninspired thinking for themselves, but actively undermine ambition, creativity and excellence in those around them.

Key Symptoms of Mediocraditis Include:

  • The “Good Enough” Reflex: (also closely related to the “not terrible” response) The patient experiences impulsive dismissal of innovative ideas with phrases like, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," or "Don't try so hard, nobody cares."

  • Chronic Complacency: The infected patient aims to find only deep comfort and is completely satisfied with sub-par results. The infected patient experiences others pursuit of excellence as an offensive or pretentious concept

  • Actively Discouraging enthusiastic peers by labelling ambition as “trying too hard” or taking things “too seriously”

  • Tactical Drift: the slow erosion of habits and skills until baseline incompetence becomes the normal

  • Hiding in plain sight: the infected default to using seniority and time riding the recliner as an excuse for previously mentioned behaviour

The Pathophysiology of Transmission:

Since mediocraditis is a social and psychological pathogen, its transmission relies heavily on verbal cues, cultural conditioning and environmental reinforcement. It rarely spreads through outright hostility or direct confrontation. Instead, it enters the hose quietly through the normalization of deviance and peer pressure.

How it Spreads:

Mediocraditis can spread in three main ways:

  1. Tall poppy pruning (Aerosolized Cynicism) when an ambitious individual presents a high-standard or initiative led idea, a carrier of mediocraditis releases a nullifying statement in the air designed to cut them down to size - such as: “relax, hero”, “we don’t do that here”, “you’ve got way too much energy”

  2. Weaponized Complacency (Direct Contact) individuals in direct contact with phrases such as “good enough” and “the fire went out” are at risk of contracting mediocraditis.

  3. Systemic Immune Suppression (Environmental Spread) Mediocraditis thrives best in institutional environments where accountability is absent and reward structures treat “showing up” identically to “performing exceptionally” When mediocrity is rewarded, the infection becomes systemic, wiping out the organizational immune system that normally rejects sub-par work.

High-Risk Environments:

While it can pop up anywhere, outbreaks are particularly virulent in closed committees, stagnant bureaucracies and institutional cultures where people have stopped asking why they do things and only care about how much money they make, the amount of time off they get, or when they can leave.

The fire station lazy-boy is a particularly hyperactive breeding ground for this disease. Subjects who tend to spend inordinate amounts of time in this zone are at an elevated risk, particularly in the daytime hours.

Treatment Options:

1. The High-Dose "Standard" Treatment

  • The Antidote: Uncompromising adherence to the craft and continuous learning.

  • How it works: Mediocraditis thrives in a vacuum where the bare minimum is treated as acceptable. The cure is raising the floor so high that complacency can no longer breathe. When training is realistic, demanding and rooted in evidence rather than "how we've always done it," the disease starves out for lack of a comfortable environment.

2. Radical Peer Accountability (The Immunity Booster)

  • The Antidote: Shifting accountability away from top-down discipline and into lateral, peer-to-peer ownership.

  • How it works: On mediocre teams, people look the other way. On a healthy team, peers immediately and respectfully call out sub-standard attitudes. When someone tries to scoff at progress or mock ambition with a cynical remark, the best treatment is a collective, unyielding refusal to let the cynicism anchor. Sunshine and direct pushback are natural disinfectants.

3. Post-Incident Debriefs (The Diagnostic Flush)

  • The Antidote: Stripping away ego through honest, objective post-mortems.

  • How it works: Whether it's after a grueling shift, a complex call, or a major training exercise, bringing the team together to genuinely evaluate what went right and what went wrong leaves no room for lazy narratives. It reconnects people to the actual stakes of the job, making it much harder to slip back into lounge-room apathy.

4. Quarantine of Chronic "Super-Spreaders"

  • The Antidote: Protecting the growth-oriented members from persistent cynicism.

  • How it works: Sometimes, a carrier is too far gone into chronic burnout or bitterness and actively works to infect new recruits. While they can't always be removed, their cultural influence must be neutralized by amplifying the voices of those who actually take pride in getting better every day.

Medications

When it comes to mediocraditis, traditional pharmaceuticals are limited to only treating symptoms. Since it’s a behavioral and cultural pathogen, you have to look past the medicine cabinet and prescribe interventions that target the root causes: comfort, ego and cultural decay.

Managing Symptoms

Some promising research has shown a single prescription of REA-LIT-EE check™ can alleviate symptoms almost immediately. However, research has shown that with one single dose the disease tends to flare up again in a few months. Because of the high costs of REA-LIT-EE check™, it is not recommended that this be a continual treatment option.

Radical Candor Drops™ (Topical Disinfectant) can be used to deliver direct, unfiltered peer feedback when symptoms are evident. The immediate application of Candor Drops™ will cause immediate stinging that have been shown to last for several days to even weeks. The application of Candor Drops™ often needs to be prescribed by a trusted professional.

Other non-prescription Interventions

  • In extreme cases of mediocraditis, patients are brought to a treatment facility that involves high quality care. Hands on Training events and conferences are known to be gatherings that can help cleanse the parasitic toxins from the body.

  • While some scientific research is still needing to be done, it appears that the disease is common to feed off of a sugar rich diet. Therefore, a diet with high quality proteins and vegetables is an excellent start.

  • A growing body of evidence has proven that a lifestyle rich with vigorous exercise and ample training can greatly combat mediocraditis. By having subjects complete daily physical fitness regimens of 30 minutes to one hour per day, infected individuals had entered remission in as little as 3 weeks!

Don’t Let Mediocraditis Get You!

It can be hard to spot mediocraditis in yourself. To make sure you are safe from this disease, ask yourself if you have experienced any of the following symptoms?

  • The minimum viable effort creep

    • do you find yourself automatically looking for the absolute easiest way to complete a task rather than the right way simply because “no one will notice”

  • Allergy to the extra step

    • feeling a sudden flash of annoyance or eye-rolling when someone suggests a deeper standard, extra drill or a cleaner way of doing things?

  • The Clock-watcher

    • shifting your primary mental investment from mastering your craft as a professional firefighter to simply living between naps and meals waiting until the shift ends

  • Resentment of high effort

    • catch yourself feeling secretly annoyed by someone else’s enthusiasm or work ethic, viewing their drive as an inconvience to YOUR comfort

  • Hiding behind the tradition shield

    • uttering phrases like “we’ve always done it this way” or “we don’t do that here”

  • Justifying the near miss

    • catching yourself brush off a sloppy execution, a missed detail or a near miss with “eh, no one got hurt”
